Rethinking Pre-College Math

An initiative of the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

The goals of the Rethinking Pre-College Math (RPM) project are to improve students' completion rates in pre-college mathematics courses and improve their success in college-level math classes.

Participating institutions have reviewed a set of practices worthy of attention in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, with the goal of building consensus around a set of strategies. These institutional teams are now adapting these strategies at their institutions and assessing the impact on student preparation, performance, and persistence.

From 2010-2012 the Washington Center co-directors worked on the RPM project in partnership with the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. The Rethinking Pre-College Math project is part of the Student Completion Initiative, a three-year project (2009-12) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Washington State Legislature.
