"The conversations over the past two years have made us aware that we can be deliberate about finding common connections, but that to do so requires us, as faculty, to return to the roots of our disciplines or to methods or assumptions that lie at the heart of interdisciplinary studies. In other words, we need to make core concepts in our disciplines or interdisciplinary assumptions, values, and methods visible both to ourselves and to our students."
The purpose of the learning community program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) is to meet the academic needs of both general education and transfer students by promoting learner-centered environments, building cross-disciplinary faculty expertise, and developing lifelong learning skills. Learning communities at CGCC have been in existence for over 10 years and have grown from one learning community offering to ten or more learning communities offered each semester. The current learning communities include fully-integrated courses, linked courses, and linked activities.
