Large-scale change initiatives focused on improving the quality of student experiences are essential if students are to succeed in higher education. This Institute offers your campus team a contextualized, project-based professional learning opportunity to get better at how you collectively
- Use data to design change initiatives that improve the quality of student experiences, assess them, and plan subsequent steps;
- Engage your whole campus in evidence-based change initiatives that promote student learning and success
- Address opportunity gaps & cultivate equity mindsets
- Create conditions that promote faculty leadership;
- Develop a sustainable model for learning-centered professional development for all campus educators, including contingent faculty;
- Continuously revise student learning outcomes for your institution, your programs, and your courses.
Teams are composed of 5-8 members, at least three of whom are faculty. Your team might also include an academic administrator, someone with assessment expertise, a student affairs professional, an institutional researcher, or other stakeholders whose perspectives will help you develop an effective and sustainable plan.
The registration fee ($1,400 per team member, $1,375 early bird registration fee if you apply before April 1, 2019) includes:
- Housing on campus from Sunday through Wednesday night (the institute ends Wednesday evening after final team presentations, around 8:30 pm)
- All materials, concurrent sessions and plenaries
- All meals (except Tuesday dinner) from dinner on Sunday through a “grab-n-go” breakfast Thursday morning
(Teams are responsible for transportation to/from the institute.)
This residential institute provides your team a carefully coordinated mix of plenaries, concurrent sessions, and focused team-time as you develop your plan to examine, improve, and support what happens in the classrooms and other learning contexts across your campus. Experienced educators from across the country will facilitate small and large group sessions and work directly with teams as resources for the entire institute.
Your team plan will focus generally on improving effective instructional practices, student engagement, and student learning and success. The specifics will vary and depend on your campus context. Plans developed in 2018 tackled, among other things,
- campus concerns about opportunity gaps and student success outcomes,
- gaps in students’ information literacy skills,
- the need for sustained and sustainable professional development,
- working on scalable solutions for engaging adjunct faculty in the student success movement
- the desire to create a more supportive campus environment where new approaches can take hold.
